Interior Design – The Eco-Friendly Way!

In our previous post we discussed how to create an eco-friendly interior design of your home. In continuation to that, lets elaborate a little more. Here are some of the pointers for you:

1. Place plants to decorate

Nothing is better than placing plants while doing the interior design of your house. They help filter air and aid in removing harmful chemicals in the room. Aside from the health benefits, it also adds colour to the space and gives it a natural and fresh ambience. It’s important that you choose plants that fit your home and don’t overpower the design of the room. Choose short ones like succulents, if you’d like to place them on coffee tables, window sill or the tall ones if you want to highlight a corner. If you are aiming to improve indoor air quality, you can go with lilies, bamboo, palm or gerbera daisy.

2. Let in natural sunlight

Another way of creating eco-friendly interiors is by letting the sunlight in and maximizing daylight. You can do this by using skylight roofs and large windows. You can also let your windows face the sun to get enough sunlight. Using daylight instead of electrical lighting while doing the interiors can be of great advantage to you as it can save electrical bills and prevent the emission of pollutants inside the house. Doing this can be healthier for both – the environment and you!

3. Choose organic and natural materials

This is one good way to achieve an eco-friendly home. But yes – you would be spending more money when you use these kinds of natural materials. If you are really aiming to achieve an interior design that is good for the environment, you have to do away with plastic, particleboard, chromed metal and many more.

4. Choose energy-efficient lighting

These would be of great help not just for the environment but also for the people operating it. Using small fluorescent lighting can help you save energy and electrical power. It can also prevent emission of greenhouse gasses and pollutants which can be harmful to your health and the environment. So when you look for lighting, look at the labels and choose those that are energy-efficient. There are many variants easily available in the market like philips or syska. Choose wisely!

5. Use energy efficient windows

You might find this odd, but your windows can help in creating an eco-friendly indoor aura. Choose windows that are lined with special coatings to reflect back the heat and provide insulation. This keeps your room warm, especially during winters. It also helps you save money, since you won’t need to use your air- conditioner or heating equipments for long hours at a stretch. Windows that are energy efficient are already a good way of preventing heat loss on cold days and prevent unwanted heat in summers. You can go with UPVC windows.

6. Buy furniture made of natural wood

Well, mostly everybody loves to use furniture that is made from organic materials. For the loose furniture, the base can be made of wood blocks, while the table tops can be made of marble or stone. You dont have to be hesitant to use eco friendly materials because they are easy to maintain . Infact, the mixed material will give it a more modern look! You can request for customized wooden or bamboo furniture or buy ready-made ones available in the market. But I would personally recommend you to get it customized since you can see the material your interior designer or contractor is using and be assured of good quality work. This can give a more personal touch to your space.

7. Use stone or wood for the flooring

Apart from your walls, your flooring should also be considered while planning the interior designing your home. You can use stone for your flooring like marble. You may also want to try using wooden parquet or laminated flooring, which adds warmth to the room. Apart from an eco-friendly ambience, it also adds contrast and it goes with absolutely everything that you add to the room.
