Artificial grass in the balcony, is the new craze among old and new apartment owners who want to get their home interiors designed. Be it for the diwali season or simply to give a new look to the balcony. The grass gives a lush green look to the space, making up for the garden you always wanted.

I often get asked by either clients or family and friends, about the upkeep, maintenance and of course-  the cost of installing artificial grass in balconies.

Below are some of the points you need to know before getting the artificial grass installed :

Prep work for floor

Waterproofing

The floor needs to be waterproofed by the contractor or the builder. Standard waterproofing is enough by using brands like Dr. Fixit or Tapecrete. This is done to avoid problems of leakage and seepage.

Slope

It’s very important to keep in mind that the water doesn’t pool up to avoid seepage, while doing interior design for your balcony. This is why the flooring needs to be sloped well. But in case the slope isn’t done properly and the water is pooling, drain cells are added between the grass and the flooring by the artificial grass vendor which will prevent water from seeping on the floor.

Draining

As mentioned above, if the water drains well, then there’s no worrying about seepage and leakage. Small, but an extremely important point to do interior design!

Dust

Before installing the artificial grass, make sure that the dust is less, even better if you get this installed after all the other work in the house has been completed.

Even Surface

Another very important point to keep in mind while getting the floor ready for artificial grass installation, is to have an even surface so that it can be laid properly without any bumps and sinks.

Maintenance

Good news- it’s almost next to nothing! Just the regular things you do every day, to maintain the house:

– Keep the turf clean. Regularly clean the fallen leaves and dust off the grass with a lawn sweeper or with a regular soft broom.

– If food, tea or wine spills on the artificial grass in the balcony or your pet has an accident on the grass carpet, make sure to clean it up as soon as possible.

– Brush the grass against the grass blades so that they’ll be upright.

– The colour of the grass can easily last upto 5-6 years. With time though, the colour might fade a bit because      of the harsh sun in our country, but you can always hang a shade net for longitivity of the artificial grass in        the summers.

– Use weedicides once in a while. It keeps the interior design of the balcony fresh and weed free

Costing

Artificial grass typically costs between Rs 150-180 per square foot, which includes installation charges. The cost depends on the quality and thickness of the artificial grass carpet you choose.
